There are two types of “SEO”.  On-page and off-page.

On-page is all the things you can alter on your site, such as title tags and content.  Actually, those two cover most of what you can affect on-page.

There is another term, off-page optimization.  This is basically linkbuilding and traffic generation.

However, do not fall into the trap of calling it “optimization”.

There is no such thing as off-page optimization.

Why?

Quite simply, because you cannot optimise what you do not control.  You can build links to try to influence your search engine position, and you can try to generate traffic to your site.  But you cannot control those things or their outcome.

It covers things such as building topical relevancy through anchor text links and it can cover such things as your site becoming seen as a topical authority, a “hub” site.  However, it is not optimization, you are not optimizing anything.

So what is it?

It is marketing.  It is trying to weigh the odds in your favour.  It is trying to build strength to your content.

It is not optimization!
