Building multiple income streams into each project you do is the key to long term success.  It really is that simple.

Now, let me clarify why, and give you some examples of how I do it.

One thing you will see on places like the warrior forum is people asking questions like:

“how do I monetise this site”

“what is the best way to make money from a website”

And on, and on, and on.

The problem is that they, and the people they discuss it with, are fixated with get rich NOW, single income streams.  The lack of long term vision, strategy and planning, in evidence from most online marketeers, is shocking.  This also means that the poison they are dying from, is passed on to most “newbies” through places like forums and ebooks.

If I have an idea for a new site, I work by one golden rule:

DO NOT DEVELOP IT UNLESS YOU HAVE THREE OR MORE INCOME STREAMS.

But why do I do this?  Simple.

Look at a marketing forum, any one you like.  Look for the panicked posts saying “my rankings have dropped”, “my adsense account has been closed”, “my CPA earnings have collapsed” etc etc.  Those people are panicking because they built their website, and in some cases, hundreds of sites, top get income from just one single revenue stream.

That’s just nuts.

Different Income Streams = Blogs Earning Extra Money Forever.

So let me give you a couple of examples of what I mean.  First, lets take a look at my site you are on now, The Link Builders Bible. It is a pretty standard niche-info site/blog.  But it delivers me multiple streams of (mostly) passive income:

1. E-product sales from not one but a RANGE of ebooks appealing to different needs.

2. Affiliate income from selling other people’s ebooks for 10% commissions.

3. Affiliate income from referring people to the amazing SEO link robot software.

4. Monthly membership fees for access to content and my mentoring helpdesk.

Once traffic reaches my target amount of daily uniques, I will then have a push on selling ad space as well. So that makes a total of FIVE income streams for the site, while still only doing the writing, design, marketing and linkbuilding for a single site.

Blogs Do Make Money – Another Example Of Different Income Streams.

I recently spotted a niche were a lot of people write about it, but there was no specialised, centralised network of sites on the subject.  So I made a blog host using wordpress multisite.  But before I started I researched and made sure I could make money from more than one source of income.

Setting up the blog site and making it appealing was easy.  Marketing it was easy as people loved the idea of a central place to read different views on this subject.  However, I was only prepared to do the work if I could see that I could make money in different ways, ie: I had a “fail safe” in place.

For the blog host my income streams are:

1. Upgrades.  People pay for more space and to remove advertising from the bottom of their blog pages.

2. Advertising.  I now host more than 100 blogs, meaning advertising is attractive in that small niche as I have thousands of indexed page to advertise on.

3. Downloads.  I slammed in a downloads plugin, and an affiliate plugn, and have a revshare store on the bloghost.  People send the content for me to sell and take a cut of, and I advertise it through the adverts on the blogs.  So no hassle for me – I just take my 10% per sale.

4. Sponsorship.  Companies sponsor wordpress themes that I make and add to the blog host.  So they get cash from links and advertising on their theme, and I get a lump of cash for taking an hour to tweak a wordpress theme.

Building Multiple Income Streams Is The Key To Long Term Success.

Read that headline again. Take it onboard, and apply it to all your projects from now on.  If you have a load of sites you make money from adsense on, what will you do if Google close your account for violations?

What will you do if sales of the single e-product you ell on a site dry up because a better product comes along?

You get the idea.  If you create single-stream sites, you are setting yourself up for a massive fall somewhere along the line.  Future-proof your online business by making sure that every project you start from now on has multiple income streams.

It’s official.  Google has done an algo update and it’s hitting some people hard.

In case you have not been keeping your eye on the ball, this was posted on the Google blog two days ago:

“…in the last day or so we launched a pretty big algorithmic improvement to our ranking—a change that noticeably impacts 11.8% of our queries—and we wanted to let people know what’s going on. This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.”

So what does this new algo update mean for your sites and SEO?

Well, from my point of view, a few members are reporting their autoblogs moving down the SERPs rapidly.  Also MFA sites and other lower-quality webpages.

So Google is hitting site quality hard.

Interestingly, the biggest losers appear to be article directories.  Here are some data relating to ezine articles  from some analysis I downloaded from a forum:

So as you can see quite clearly, articles ranking for keyterms are taking a hit.  It’s the same trends appearing on ALL the big article sites.   If you focus on article marketing, I have one suggestion for you: diversify now, the gravy train is stopping at a station.

My advice is DO NOT submit your quality content to article sites for a while.  You are not going to get maximum SEO benefit from them on sites such as goarticles anymore, as those sites have been targeted. Get your good content on your own websites, and do it now.

Time is the most precious commodity in the world.  We never have enough.

Due to family commitments, I only get about an hour a day to manage my online business at the minute.  So sometimes I do not have time to do everything I would like.

You may have noticed a lack of recent articles, well for a little while they will be less frequent.  I am however working on some killer new material to add to the site.  I will also be experimenting with some monetisation methods for the content, which will replace “content membership” at the end of the current billing cycle.

Most of the time I spend online is helping members through my mentor helpdesk. The initial price was an amazing $10 for month one and then $20 for subsequent months. It seems I have been a bit to successful, as membership has maxed out at the level I can manage at such a low price.

So as I promised on launch, the price will eventually double. Well, I don’t think I actually need to be that  extreme.  To ensure I weed out the time wasters, while offering access to help at a price anyone serious about their online ventures can afford, membership is now a flat rate of $20 a month.

So on the down side prices are up (booo!), but on the positive side still affordable AND I am working on some killer content (hooray!).

I am  also rationalising all my online ventures into one central resource site, and this may present a great opportunity for a few people in the near future.   Get on the mailing list to get word of how that can benefit you once it launches.

How Can I Create An Effective Link Building Strategy?

The situation that people find themselves in, that leads to them asking this question, is as follows.

They have a website, it’s not ranking the way they hoped. They see other sites doing better, but cannot figure out what they are doing to rank  higher. After sifting through everything, they decide that it must be that the sites above them have a better link building strategy, so they ask for one.

The problem is that not only is there no such thing as a “cookie cutter” linkbuilding strategy out there, but also that people generally make a fundamental error when discussing linkbuilding.

They mistake methods for strategy.

To expand on that statement, people describe single methods of linkbuilding as a “strategy”.  The problem is it is not a strategy, it is just one method of building links that fits into an overall strategy.

To give you an example of what I mean.  People may tell you that using a service such as “The Linkjuicer” is a link building strategy.  But it’s not.  The linkjuicer service submits your site to social bookmarking sites.  So the linkjuicer is one way of getting one sort of links.  That is a method of linkbuilding, not a strategy for linkbuilding.

The Best Link Building Strategy For Your Website Is…..

……up to you! Any strategy for linkbuilding has to have basic principles, but the actual methods you use are up to you.

Now you may be wondering why I have an image for this post that is clearly from either the Afghan or Iraq conflicts.

The reason is that I want to create an analogy for you. Now it may be a little controversial comparing link building strategy with the strategy employed by coalition forces in two current wars.  But stick with me.

In Iraq, the Coalition forces built up overwhelming strength. Most people in starting their linkbuilding do the same.  They pick up software such as scrapebox, xrumer, SENuke, or SEO Link Robot.  They buy profile link packets, they outsource blog commenting, they use software to hit thousands of directories, software to spin and submit thousands of articles.

In short, they build overwhelming force and then attack with “shock and awe”.

And nothing much happens after an initial victory that lasts just a few weeks.

If anything, the site bounces high then drops like a stone, then either vanishes from the SERPs completely, or bounces around like a rubber ball.

So they hit it again, and again.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, winning the war, the initial battles, the open fighting, was easy.  Coalition forces had the training, logistics, technology and power to smash enemy forces in the field.  And that’s what the automation allows you to do in linkbuilding.

The problem is that the enemy forces then retreat into the population and conduct a guerrilla war.  Finding out where they are, how they operate, what their mindset, ethics and objectives are is tough.

And that’s what happens between the link builder and Google.  We attack with shock and awe, then find that after the initial punch, we find it difficult to understand if we are winning, what Google thinks and how it is acting.

More often than not, our massive firepower just makes the war harder to conduct in the long term.

Link Building Exit Strategy.

Tough news for you I’m afraid.  There is no link building exit strategy.

Going back to our previous analogy, the coalition forces found that opening the fight was easy, then it got tough, then they realised that they needed an exit strategy.

Once you start a war with Google, you have to keep fighting, you cannot stop.  If you stop, other sites will take up the war, and yours will slowly (or rapidly) sink without a trace.

NOW is the time, after the initial battles, to employ your big guns. But not to smash Google to pieces, but to build steady links with minimum effort.

So lets round up and put this all together.

A Link Building Strategy For Your Website.

Coalition forces employed overwhelming force.  They won the conventional war quickly with sheer power.  Then they got bogged down as they tried to figure out how to adapt to fighting an enemy who would not come out to fight fair, but who conducted a brutal covert war.

Then they had to decide if they could win, and how they could get out of the war.

With your link building strategy, you need to think about the stages you face.

Initially, with a new site, you need to build trust.  So rather than hitting the site with the big guns, build steady, quality links.  Don’t employ a single method, don’t do anything too un-natural (like pinging mass lists of profile link URL’s for example) and build up your forces by adding content.

Stage two is to understand your enemy, Google, and to take counter measures. Expect your rankings to bounce all over the place.  Be patient. Ramp up your content and link creation.  Start to employ your mass link tools bit by bit.

Fight the long war.

Eventually, and it may take 6 months, you will have beaten Google into submission.  Google will stabilise your ranking, it will come to the negotiating table and say “this is where we are”.

That is when you can employ the big guns. Once Google wants to negotiate, then you can start ramping things up.

Use the tools to create additional strength for your now established SERP rankings.

Once you have done this, you can slowly wind things down to below the levels you started at.  The odd it of good content with linkbait potential, a few well-gained links from various sources, a few generated links each week.

Conclusion.

So hopefully you can see how to conduct a war against Google now using an effective linkbuilding strategy.  Here are the main points again:

1. Don’t go in hard and fast with massive firepower.  Start slow, flush Google out into the open fully.

2. Once Google is fully in the open you can start to engage it, but not too much too soon or it will run for cover.

3. Once Google starts asking for negotiations, hit it with your big guns, end its resistance with a sustained high-level campaign.

4.  Maintain a low level police action to keep the peace.

The other take away from this post I want to emphasise is that there is no such thing “cookie cutter” link building strategy. No “one size fits all” plan you can follow like an a-b-c.

Some people pretend that there is a plan, a blueprint, that guarantees success.  There is no such thing. Every situation is different.

As the person on the ground, only you can make the decisions, based on the intelligence you gather and the strategy you employ.  Your strategy should be a long term one.  Mix up all methods of linkbuilding and use them all continually.
