			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/article-marketing-rescue.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1320" title="article-marketing-rescue" src="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/article-marketing-rescue.png" alt="" width="628" height="210" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s official.  Google has done an algo update and it&#8217;s hitting some people hard.</p>
<p>In case you have not been keeping your eye on the ball, this was posted on the Google blog two days ago:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;&#8230;in the last day or so we launched a pretty big algorithmic improvement to our ranking—a change that noticeably impacts 11.8% of our queries—and we wanted to let people know what’s going on. This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>(<a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/finding-more-high-quality-sites-in.html" target="_blank">source</a>)</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>So what does this new algo update mean for your sites and SEO?</h2>
<p>Well, from my point of view, a few members are reporting their autoblogs moving down the SERPs rapidly.  Also MFA sites and other lower-quality webpages.</p>
<p>So Google is hitting site quality hard.</p>
<p>Interestingly, the biggest losers appear to be article directories.  Here are some data relating to ezine articles  from some analysis I downloaded from a forum:</p>
<p>ezinearticles.com</p>
<p>ezine &#8211; From #1 to #2<br />
ezine articles &#8211; From #1 to #1<br />
cell phone lookup &#8211; From #1 to #2<br />
reverse phone lookup &#8211; From #21 to #35<br />
&#8220;lowest air fare&#8221; &#8211; From #&gt;100 to #&gt;100<br />
copy paste traffic review &#8211; From #4 to #34<br />
cell phone &#8211; From #&gt;100 to #&gt;100<br />
reverse cell phone lookup &#8211; From #4 to #2<br />
phone number lookup &#8211; From #26 to #36<br />
ezine article &#8211; From #1 to #1<br />
phone lookup &#8211; From #31 to #&gt;100<br />
acai berry &#8211; From #17 to #&gt;100<br />
penis enlargement &#8211; From #5 to #57<br />
article submission &#8211; From #2 to #15<br />
reverse cell phone &#8211; From #3 to #38<br />
advertising profits from home &#8211; From #1 to #6<br />
articles &#8211; From #5 to #7<br />
cell phone number lookup &#8211; From #6 to #13<br />
credit card debt relief &#8211; From #1 to #12<br />
reverse lookup &#8211; From #21 to #&gt;100<br />
fatty liver diet &#8211; From #1 to #5<br />
life insurance no health check &#8211; From #1 to #8<br />
ezines &#8211; From #1 to #1<br />
protoss build order &#8211; From #6 to #13<br />
normal blood sugar levels &#8211; From #19 to #15<br />
get my ex back &#8211; From #2 to #10<br />
icc authority &#8211; From #1 to #7<br />
male enhancement pills &#8211; From #5 to #33<br />
carbonite &#8211; From #12 to #41<br />
enzine articles &#8211; From #1 to #1</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p>So as you can see quite clearly, articles ranking for keyterms are taking a hit.  It&#8217;s the same trends appearing on ALL the big article sites.   If you focus on article marketing, I have one suggestion for you: diversify now, the gravy train is stopping at a station.</p>
<p>My advice is DO NOT submit your quality content to article sites for a while.  You are not going to get maximum SEO benefit from them on sites such as goarticles anymore, as those sites have been targeted. Get your good content on your own websites, and do it now.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/google-instant-longtail.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1153" title="google-instant-longtail" src="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/google-instant-longtail.png" alt="" width="628" height="210" /></a></p>
<p>Now as some of you may know, I love trawling forums.  Perhaps it is a bit of an obsession of mine.  It is something I have always done and the thing it allows me to do quickly is simple.</p>
<p>It allows me to quickly establish the current trends doing the rounds on the internet underground.</p>
<p>Over the paste couple of weeks I have seen an increase in posts on several notable SEO and marketing forums all along the same lines:</p>
<p><em>My Google traffic has dropped off dramatically.</em></p>
<p>I have also had a couple of <a href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/join" target="_blank">my members</a> expressing the same concerns.</p>
<p>In most cases the rankings have stayed the same, but the clickthrough volume has dipped.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s going on?</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h1>Google Wants The Longtail Dead.</h1>
<p>The more I think about it the more it makes sense.  Google wants to minimise the impact of the longtail in search.  Why does is want to do this?  Simply because by minimising the longtail search results &#8220;average joe&#8221; does by funneling him away from them, it allows Google to deliver the more obvious results more quickly, ie , less searches.  This is apparently a better &#8220;user experience&#8221; for average joe, than  him using it as a true search tool.</p>
<p>It also allows Google to deliver more traffic for the larger sites and increase its own adwords revenue.  How?  By forcing people into selecting more major search terms, more people are going to be viewing and clicking the high-competition adwords listings.</p>
<h2><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></h2>
<h2>How Is Google Eating Up The Longtail Searches?</h2>
<p>It is doing it with one word: Instant.</p>
<p>Google Instant.</p>
<p>When you start typing into Google now, by default it starts displaying the &#8220;most likely&#8221; searches you are looking for based on, well whatever criteria they are using to display them.</p>
<p>The bottom line is that as soon as you see a result that is semi-relevant, you select it now, well average joe does, rather than completing the search you were originally going to do.</p>
<p>Over millions of searches, this is going to funnel an awful lot of traffic away from the longtail and deliver it to the search terms Google instant delivers for you to choose from as you type.</p>
<p>Why bother continuing to type when something that roughly fits your subject is there to select?</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>Complacency, Misplaced Trust and Stupidity.</h2>
<p>Yep, that&#8217;s what I am accusing a lot of the  SEO &#8220;experts&#8221; of.</p>
<p>I remember when Instant launched, I read a blog post about how Instant would destroy SEO.</p>
<p>He was absolutely shot to pieces in over 200 comments, with other SEO&#8217;s coming out with all sorts of soundbite crap.</p>
<p>Well that guy was right, as was I. The evidence is growing that Instant is funneling more search traffic through a narrower range of more generic, high-level search terms. When I started seeing more and more of these &#8220;lost my traffic&#8221; forum posts, I joined the dots back to what this guy said when google Instant launched.</p>
<p>the simple fact is that less and less people are finding the longtail now, simply because they are casual net users who see a term that sort of matches and go with it. Even if they do tweak their search, the chances are they will tweak within the terms they have been given, ie; they will go with the feedback Google gives them as they type and adjust, rather than thinking of what they actually *really* wanted to search for.</p>
<p>So yes, this is a game changer. And yes it does mean the death of SEO for a group of people up to a point.  The small sites and those making their living online away from the glitz of the big money.  But then I suppose the big SEO firms would say &#8220;it&#8217;s no big deal&#8221; because it means they are going to be given more of search on a plate to dominate.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>They are being headed off at longtail pass.</strong></em></p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>So What Can You Do?</h2>
<p>Well if your websites depend on the long tail and you have noticed a traffic dip recently, Google Instant is very likely the reason why.</p>
<p>Of course Google will not acknowledge this is a game changer, or what their strategy is.  But isn&#8217;t a massive co-incidence that they also changed their Adwords tool format at the same time?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a smoke screen ladies and gents.</p>
<p>To counter it, you are going to have to confront it.  This means typing your chosen longtail term into Google Instant and seeing what terms come up ahead of yours.</p>
<p><em>You are going to have to get your site onto those battlefields. </em></p>
<p>Yes it&#8217;s exactly what Google wants.  Yes you are going to have to fight harder to get ranked.  Your titles and descriptions are going to have to be utterly compelling and attractive. It&#8217;s going to be hard work.</p>
<p>But based on the evidence so far, what will happen if you do not, is that you are going to be fighting for a smaller piece of a smaller pie with more and more people.</p>
<p>Personally I think Google Instant is a loathsome strategy. It is funneling searchers down paths they would not otherwise take.  Not as a service, but to control.  That is what Google is really about.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.steverubel.com/google-instant-makes-seo-irrelevant" target="_blank">This is the post I was referring to</a>.  read it, read the reaction and note the people who shot him down.  Two months on a lot of those who commented must be wishing they had waited and engaged their brains. No of course SEO is not dead, but a huge swathe of it, away from the big money SEO, is being squeezed hard.  Any idiot could have worked that out.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s been tough getting time to write as much as I would like at the minute.</p>
<p>With my wife running her company, I have been on daddy duty a lot recently.  Most of my spare moments have gone into building the framework of what is set to be my flagship product next year:  The Link Builders Bible 2011.</p>
<p>Any remaining time has gone into helping my site members.  There are now 47 of them, so the amount of ongoing mentoring and support has increased to the point where I am capping members at 50.  Next year I will be introducing a new &#8220;content&#8221; member option with a low monthly rate.  If people would like me to get that sorted more quickly, then drop me an email, if enough people want access then I will get on with it.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>Anyway, the time I had today I re-jigged the seo-related plugins I use on my site.</h2>
<p>Previously I had separate plugins to manage breadcrumb urls, robots.txt and nofollow, sitemaps, rss feeds, on-page seo, permalinks, links in rss feeds, and cleaning up the head section of the site. So lots of plugin updating, lots of potential conflicts and lots of slow admin panel in wordpress!</p>
<p>But I just found that Joost De Valk, a top-rated wordpress plugin guy, has amalgamated some of his older plugins and added new features to create the <a href="http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/" target="_blank">wordpress SEO plugin</a>.</p>
<p>I highly recommend that you install this plugin and set it up.  It is almost completely a tick-box experience and it will make a difference to the average wordpress installation.  Why?  Because it will optimize and exclude the things that can affect your <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler" target="_blank">spidering</a> and rankings.</p>
<p>The plugin will even, by selecting a few tickboxes, save you from the main duplicate content issues that some blog owner suffer.  The problem, that an awful lot of wordpress users are not aware of, is that there are potentially several copies of your content on your wordpress site.  The wordpress seo plugin allows you to stop indexing of these areas of your site, saving you from duplicate content issues.</p>
<p>It even has an equivalent to the &#8220;all in one seo pack&#8221; plugin that is so widely used, which I think is better.  The reason I think it&#8217;s better is that one you have written your post, you can tweak the optimization in the plugin, just like in all in one seo pack.</p>
<p>However it&#8217;s killer feature is that you type in the keyword you are targeting for the post, click a button, and the plugin checks the keywords are included in the key on-page areas and can even offer related terms.  Absolutely great, especially for beginners to cut their teeth with.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s totally free, so there is absolutely no excuse for not installing it and giving your wordpress site the best chance with it&#8217;s on-site SEO.</p>
<p>Highly recommended.</p>

<h1>How To Get Links Your Indexed.</h1>
<p>One of the most common questions I see asked on SEO forums is people asking how to get their links indexed.  Another variation on this is that people cannot get their sites indexed. This is always an odd one for me as I never have that problem.  However, there are so many variations of answer that I reckon a lot of people get confused by the advice and either do it wrong or give up. The basic problem is that Google is reluctant to index certain types of webpage. If you were Google, would you want to index millions of pages of half-empty profiles with a link on them?  No.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h1>Link Indexing:  The Confusion That Leads To A Misconception.</h1>
<p>People ask, and get answers to that question, how they get their links indexed by Google. It is the question that you will find jumps up if you start typing it into Google. The problem is that the question is wrong, and the answers never point that out. So, to make it crystal clear:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>WE DO NOT NEED TO INDEX THE PAGES CONTAINING THE LINKS.</strong></p>
<p>The search engines just need to know those links exist and add the link to your sites link profile, they do not need to be indexed as pages in the common sense of the term, ie appearing in the SERP&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Need proof on that?  Find some of your profile links in Google webmaster tools, then try searching for that URL in Google.  Chances are most will not show up, the pages the link is on is not indexed.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>Yet the link appears in your link profile.</em></p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h1>So The Goal Is Not Getting Webpages Indexed &amp; Ranking.</h1>
<p>For getting links indexed, or rather added to a website&#8217;s link profile, they need to be spidered.  The method I am about to outline contains one element that most people know about, RSS submissions, but with a twist. The second part of the method is little known, and is certainly not one you will routinely read on mainstream SEO forums.</p>
<p>Using my method outlined here, you can get the googlebot lapping up your links AND getting more of your webpages indexed. If you are creating profile links especially, are you sure that you are not wasting your time?</p>
<p>Unless the links page is visited, it is a waste of your precious life creating those links. My method, outlined in detail here, means I routinely get more than 80% of my links spidered.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h1>Method For Getting Links And Webpages Spidered &amp; Indexed.</h1>
<p>Having given you the juicy intro, I am afraid I am going to have to dump you by the side of the road to make your own way home. Unless you are a site member of course, then you get access to the rest of this article and the method it contains.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2><a href="../join">Click here to find out more about the benefits of membership.</a></h2>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">. </span></p>
<a href ="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/join" ><b>This content is for members only.</b></a>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h1>Conclusion.</h1>
<p>The above method means that more than 80% of my profile links get spidered and it does not cost anything to do. There is a bit of leg work involved, but it is productive work as without doing that you are wasting some of the time you spent building the links in the first place.</p>
<p>The method works for any type of link, but is good for getting profile links spidered. In addition, you can use the same method for submitting your own page URL&#8217;s to increase spider visits to your websites.</p>
<p>Good luck, and see you at the top of the SERP&#8217;s <img src='http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Whenever I read a forum on SEO, I get concerned.  The reason I get concerned is that I always see threads where people are endlessly, obsessively  banging on about their on-page SEO factors.</p>
<p>Some people spend days, weeks or months (years?) re-tweaking their content to make it &#8220;perfect&#8221;.  They agonise over every single word they put in italics, they pore over every combination of keywords, all in the hope of finding the holy grail.</p>
<p>Well, I have bad new for you.</p>
<p>It is generally accepted amongst SEO professionals that on-page optimization in SEO accounts for around 15-20% of the ranking factors Google takes into account when determining the relevance of a page to a users search.  So the bottom line, the BIG take-away is this:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>No matter how much work you do, the time you spend tweaking your on-page optimization is addressing only 15% of the total things you should be considering.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Once Google established the relevance of a page to the search term, it is far more interested in the things which account for more than 60% of the ranking factors it applies &#8211; a sites trust and its external <a title="back links" href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/linkbuilding-guide">back links</a>.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h1>The Five Minute On-Page SEO Guide.</h1>
<p>Okay, here we go, how to optimize your webpage in five minutes and then forget about it.</p>
<p><em><strong>1. The Page Title Tag.</strong></em> This is the single most important thing you need to consider carefully and get right. If you are targeting the term &#8220;my mum&#8217;s the best cook in the world&#8221;, then that is your title.  Don&#8217;t add extra words before the keyterm, only after it and only if absolutely necessary.  Don&#8217;t add extra words into the keyterm to make it more human-readable unless absolutely essential.</p>
<p><strong><em>2.  &lt;H&gt; Tags.</em></strong> The H1 tag is the only one that appears to really matter in relation to on-page optimization in SEO. You should use H2, H3 etc for headings lower down the page to keep the <a href="http://www.w3schools.com/" target="_blank">WS3 obsessives</a> happy, but in the main don&#8217;t worry about these too much.  Write them for the reader and if possible get a variation of your main keyterm in a couple of times.  Do not just repeat your main title or H1 tag wording, mix it up.</p>
<p><em><strong>3. Image names and tags. </strong></em> Forget the image title attribute.  What you need to boost your on-page SEO is a relevant image name and alt tag.  Google places more and more importance on images as it develops image search, so use these to their maximum.  Make your image names relevant, so for example, call one mum-is-best-cook-in-world.jpg, and alt it &#8220;my mum  is the best cook in the world&#8221;.  Again, use your keyterm variations, mix it all up but keep each image name and alt description closely related to your on-page content.</p>
<p><em><strong>4. Bold, italic, underline etc.</strong></em> Personally I don&#8217;t bother with this.  I am yet to see any proof that you can influence yourranking by using any of these.  If using them fits the context of what you are writing, then use them.  Do not agonise over them, you are totally wasting your precious life if you do.</p>
<p><strong><em>5. Meta description.</em></strong> This is a mixed one.  Some experts say the meta description tag in your page header does effect your on page ranking, others say it does not.  The bottom line is that Google has already stated that their bots ignore this meta tag for determining relevance . Google does however use it for some page descriptions in its SERP&#8217;s (Search Engine Result Page&#8217;s), so if you use it, make sure it is compelling and appealing to a human, not a search engine.</p>
<p><strong>6. Meta keywords.</strong> Forget it for Google. I put my main keyword and a couple of related ones in there, if I other with this meta tag at all. In terms of on-page optimization, keywords are worthless.  Well, they are for Google anyway as Google ignores the meta keywords tag. Google is not the only search engine though (shock, horror!), so if you care about traffic from other search sources, then use meta keywords sparingly and sensibly.</p>
<p><em><strong>7. Internal linking.</strong></em> Now this one does matter. Make sure that you link to your most important content within the text of your relevant, related pages.  Make sure that you link to that important content using the keyterm you want to rank that target page for.  Never just use a generic &#8220;click here&#8221; as the link, always use the keyterm within the anchor text. Another tip is to always format your internal link to point to the full URL, never just the file name (for example &#8220;index.html&#8221;).</p>
<p><em><strong>8. Nofollow You Mechanical links.</strong></em> By mechanical links I mean links that are there repeatedly on most pages, pointing to other internal pages that you do not want your &#8220;link juice&#8221; passing to.  For example, nofollow your contact page and your login page.</p>
<p><em><strong>9. Outbound linking.</strong></em> I want you to link out to at least one relevant, authority site on each of your pages.  Madness?  No, it will build your own authority.  Google loves &#8220;hub&#8221; sites, sites that offer information but also link to other sites so visitors can further their reading.  So link out to Wikipedia or an authority site in your niche.  As an example:</p>
<p>&#8220;The importance of on-page SEO optimization is something that <a href="http://seomoz.org" target="_blank">SEOmoz</a> has also stated is vital to the success of your website&#8221;.</p>
<p>A relevant, authority site linked to from within  highly relevant context.  Google loves it, so use it often.</p>
<p>If you are squeamish about people leaving your site you can employ two tactics to minimise this.  The first is simply to use the target=&#8221;blank&#8221; attribute in your links to open them in a new browser window.  This will ensure your content is still open even if the person visits the link you provide.</p>
<p>The other way is more grey-hat.  Simply place a link class in your css file that is exactly the same as your normal page text so it does not change colour, underline on mouseover etc.  Then it is a link but people will not see it as a link.  I know, you are gasping as telling me that Google will burn my site in sandbox hell for doing so. Well, all I can say is that in 14 years of building websites I have used this tactic many times and never, ever had a page go into sandbox.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p><strong>TOP TIP:</strong></p>
<p>For both internal linking and outbound linking I use a wordpress plugin called <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/insights/" target="_blank">insights</a> (ooh, I linked out to an authority page with Pagerank again). Using this plugin, you can highlight the words you want to turn to an anchor text link, then search using the insights search box and then simply click  button to add the link straight into your post.  You can select for insights to search for content on your own site relevant to the highlighted text, or you can select to search Wikipedia, Google and others.  It is a great way to quickly find relevant on-site and off-site content to link out to.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p><em><strong>10. Keyword density.</strong></em> If you are worried about keyword density then you are probably trying to stuff your keyterms in so often that your content reads poorly.  Make sure you get your main keyword/term into the area&#8217;s described above and make sure your main term is in your actual text a couple of times.  Then write naturally and just weave in your related terms where appropriate.  Agonising over keyword density in the age of LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) and other advances in the recognition of the relevance of a piece of text makes this concern pointless. So, just in case you did not get it, here it is again:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Forget about keyword density. Do keyword research and then write naturally.</em></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em><br />
</em></strong></p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>The Top Tip To Only Spending Five Minutes Doing On-Page SEO.</h2>
<p>To complete your on-page SEO factors in five minutes requires you do one piece of work beforehand.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Do thorough keyword/term research.</span></p>
<p>If you know exactly what the main keyterm you are targeting is, and you are also armed with a couple of close variations and a couple of related terms, then you are set.  Having in your mind exactly what you are optimizing your content for will allow you to get it done quickly and accurately.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #008000;"><strong>I will be covering keyword research in depth in a later post, but I will be making that a &#8220;members only&#8221; post.  To read about the benefits of joining us here on The LinkBuilders Bible <a href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/join">click here</a>.</strong></span></p>
<p><em>(Did you notice the deliberate mistake in that link?  If not then go back to the top and read it all again. If you did then congratulations, you just passed the first part of SEO101&#8230;..)</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/independence.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-751" title="independence" src="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/independence.png" alt="" width="628" height="210" /></a></p>
<p>In the movie <a title="Independence Day" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_(film)">Independence Day</a> the alien attackers use our satellites against us to further their evil plan to enslave mankind.</p>
<p>Now I am not suggesting that Google wants to go quite as far, but I am increasingly concerned by their core feature &#8211; search.  We now have  <a title="Google Instant" href="http://www.google.com/instant/">Google Instant</a> to contend with, although it&#8217;s initial impact on SEO appears to have been low.</p>
<p>But what I have discovered through some testing over the past few months is that Google is using our datestamps against us.  Well, if you use WordPress they are.</p>
<p>Google wants to deliver fresh, relevant content.  No problem there.  but what is an issue is how they are deciding what content is fresh.</p>
<p>Google cannot call content fresh by displaying the latest pages it has found and spidered, because that content could be old.  So what they have done is to make datestamps within blog posts a criteria by which they determine fresher content.</p>
<p>Not only does Google offer an option to filter by time periods within a search, but the search results also display results with the date contained within the blog post visible within the SERP.</p>
<p>Take a look at this SERP to see what I mean:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/datestamps.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-752" title="datestamps" src="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/datestamps.png" alt="" width="628" height="238" /></a></p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>Ok, I get it Jason, but what is the problem here?</h2>
<p>Well, I know for a fact that sometimes I visually filter out results in a SERP by looking for the latest dated page. So by including dates Google is offering the searcher a tool to scan a SERP and filter out results arbitrarily by date.</p>
<p>It does not mean that your post is less relevant, but because you have a date appended to your listing, you are potentially being filtered out visually and suffering less clickthru&#8217;s to your site as a result.</p>
<p>There is also a secondary negative effect in terms of SEO. People are more likely to link to what they view as &#8220;fresh&#8221; content.  This means your link bait potential could drop off more quickly as your content gets older.</p>
<p>Again, it does not mean your content is no longer relevant, it&#8217;s just that people obviously will want to offer their own readers the freshest content possible if that option is available as part of a decision making process.</p>
<p>You can bet that if I have visually filtered out, or altered the timescales to only display the newer results, then others have.  If I discriminated purely on the basis of a date, I bet others, including you, have as well.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>I Tested And Here Is What I found.</h2>
<p>I took the datestamps out of one of my blogs. Three months later I compared the data with that from the three months prior to that, when I had datestamps on the site.</p>
<p>I found that my natural link acquisition went UP without timestamps.  That was a bit of a shocker for me. I also found that my traffic went up as well.  Not a lot, but there was an upwards trend I could not attibute to anything else.</p>
<p>Now I know it is not conclusive, but there is enough evidence there for me to have made changes here at The LinkBuilders Bible. Why give Google the information they need to potentially negatively affect your site in the SERP&#8217;s?</p>
<p>One worrying thing I also discovered was that even if I took out the datestamps, but left datestamps on the comments, Google used those dates instead. So my content was having it&#8217;s &#8220;freshness&#8221; assessed on the basis of when people commented on it!</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>But, But&#8230;..</h2>
<p><span style="color: #333333;">I know, you are confused. You just looked at the top of this post and you can see a date.  Well, that&#8217;s because I modified WordPress using a little trick to hide the date from the big G but to keep it visible to visitors. </span></p>
<p>The reason for keeping the date visible is that a lot of people like to see a date.  It reassures them the content is fresh, it reassures them that they are reading the right content and not wasting time on content that is old and out dated.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>Leveling The Playing Field.</h2>
<p>Lots of other platforms and hand-coded html sites don&#8217;t have dates at all.  Some other platforms do.</p>
<p>My concern is that the sites offering dates are actually in danger of being penalised through absolutely no fault of their own due to the options Google offers and human nature.</p>
<p>So I changed my WordPress site to level the playing field for me.</p>
<p>If you are now considering the benefits of changing your own WordPress site, then you will love the next bit &#8211; it&#8217;s full instructions of how to do it.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>How To Remove The Date From Your WordPress Posts, Pages, Categories And Comments.</h2>
<p>the following are instructions for editing your template files via your WordPress admin panel.  If you have the knowledge, you can of course FTP into your files and change them that way as well.</p>
<p>I will say this, although of course you do not need to be told, always back-up the files before you edit them!</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p><em><strong>Remove the date from the post page:</strong></em></p>
<p>1. After login to your self-hosted wordpress blog  go to Appearance &gt; Editor<br />
2. Open single.php and find &lt; ?php the_time(&#8216;F j, Y&#8217;); ? &gt; or &lt;?php the date();?&gt;<br />
3. Remove the code and save.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p><em><strong>Remove the date from your main index page.</strong></em></p>
<p>1.  Open index.php and  find the code: &lt; ?php the_time(&#8216;F j, Y&#8217;); ? &gt; or &lt;?php the date();?&gt;<br />
2.  Delete it and save.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p><em><strong>How to remove the date from static  WordPress pages.</strong></em></p>
<p>1. Open page.php and find &lt; ?php the_time(&#8216;F j, Y&#8217;); ? &gt; or &lt;?php the date();?&gt;<br />
3. You guessed it, delete and save.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>Removing the datestamp from comments.</h2>
<p>It&#8217;s a bit different for comments, as this can vary from theme to theme.</p>
<p>Open comments.php and delete &lt;?php comment_date() ?&gt; and/or<br />
&lt;?php the_time.</p>
<p>Some themes have an internal function hooked in rather than displaying the default WordPress php time/date code,  so you will not see the date call on the comments page.  In that case replace your comments.php file with the one from the default wordpress theme and tweak it to look like the rest of your site.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p><em><strong>Removing the datestamp from your categories.</strong></em></p>
<p>Remove from categories simply by finding &lt;?php the_time(&#8216;M d, Y&#8217;); ?&gt; in category.php and deleting it.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>But I Want To Display Dates.  You Mentioned A Trick?</h2>
<p>The trick is simple.  You call the date using javascript rather than the default php code.  If you call the date using php, it will appear in the source code of the page when loaded.  This is because php is a server-side language.  Using php,  Google will see the date in your source code when it spiders the site.</p>
<p>Javascript however is loaded by the browser, it is a client-side script.  So your source code will show the javascript code, not the date.</p>
<p>If you want to have a date, follow the steps outlined above but when you delete each piece of php code, replace it with this:</p>
<p>&lt;script language=&#8221;javascript&#8221;&gt; document.write(&#8216;&lt;?php the_time(&#8216;F j, Y&#8217;) ?&gt;&#8217;); &lt;/script&gt;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/jsinsert.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-756" title="jsinsert" src="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/jsinsert.png" alt="" width="620" height="326" /></a></p>
<p>Oh, and one last thing.  Look at your permalink structure.  If you are using the format that includes a date then you need to change that as well.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h2>Conclusion.</h2>
<p>The decision to take dates out of your WordPress sites if of course your own.  I am sure there are some of you who think it is &#8220;gaming&#8221; things.  I would say to that, what about the sites who do not have datestamps by default?  Why should it mainly be WordPress users being singled out with this, just because of a software default?</p>
<p>It is of course your decision. This posts tells you exactly how to make the changes should you decide that you are not going to help Google to use your datestamps against you. The different is you do not have to plant a virus in an alien spaceship or kill yourself flying your fighter jet into one to achieve it&#8230;.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/angry.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-526" title="angry" src="http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/angry.png" alt="" width="628" height="210" /></a></p>
<p>Go to a forum that has a section on SEO, any forum you like.  You will find the same three questions asked a dozen times a month on every single one of them.  It drives me insane that people do not know how to use the search box!</p>
<p>I am sure you are now wondering what these questions are,  so in no particular order, the three most annoying, pointless and ill-considered SEO questions asked on forums are:</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>&#8220;How many links is it safe to build in a day?&#8221;</em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>&#8220;How many links do I need to be number one on Google?&#8221;</em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>&#8220;Why is Google not finding my links?&#8221;</em></p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<p>So to put this to bed once and for all, lets go through each question, then you can point them here next time you grit your teeth while reading a forum.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h3>&#8220;How many links is it safe to build in a day?&#8221;</h3>
<p>A better question would be &#8220;How long is a piece of string?&#8221;.   Being mischievous, I often cannot help replying with a random number, assuring them that this is the number they need to build.</p>
<p>The real answer is, there is no safe limit and it really does not matter how many links you build each day.  Even if you built a million links in a day, Google would only find about 1% of them during that 24 hour period.  So by the time Google has found all those links, days and weeks have passed with a few links found every day.</p>
<p>Some people will swear that any link building strategy requires limits on the links built each day/week etc.  Basically, that&#8217;s rubbish.</p>
<p>Google for example asks you to create content people want to link to.  So you create that content and a load of people link to it.  Is that in your control?  Can you control how many links other people build every day?  Nope.</p>
<p>Just mix up the ways you build those links, build them to all the pages on your site and keep on building them until you shut your site or die.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h3>&#8220;How many links do I need to be number one on Google?&#8221;</h3>
<p>The answer is <a title="42" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42"></a><a title="42" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42_(number)">42</a>.  Actually it&#8217;s not, but it is a good an answer as any other number.</p>
<p>The real answer is that nobody knows.  Why?  because not all links are created equal.  Some links carry more weight and authority than others.</p>
<p>As an example, one of my sites was cited in a national newspaper once, that single high-authority link skyrocketed my sites SERP&#8217;s in a week.  I went from zero to hero.  That was one single link after months of link building had produced little impact.</p>
<p>On top of that, you need to factor in topical relevance and Latent Semantic Indexing of your content.</p>
<p>So quality links trump quantity links and there is no way anyone can tell you how many links you need to build to rank in X position.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ffffff;">.</span></p>
<h3>&#8220;Why is Google not finding my links?&#8221;</h3>
<p>Beginners always do the same thing.  They create a site and spend a week building links.  Every single day they feverishly check the SERP&#8217;s to see if they are ranking for their chosen keywords.  Then they check Google webmaster tools or Yahoo Explorer to see if their links are indexed.</p>
<p>They never are.</p>
<p>Sometimes links are never found  &#8211; you can minimise this using a variety of strategies I may outline in the comments if you ask me nicely <img src='http://www.linkbuildersbible.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Sometimes links take weeks, months and years to be found.  Sometimes they just never are found by the search engines.</p>
<p>And even if they are found, sometimes they simply do not appear in Google webmaster tools or Yahoo Explorer.</p>
<p>Nobody knows why.</p>
<p>My advice is always the same.  Stop worrying about the links you built.  Spend the time building new ones rather than checking for old ones.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Some of you may be scratching your heads today and wondering why the keyword tool &#8220;Google Wonder Wheel&#8221; has suddenly disappeared from the left hand column of search results.</p>
<p>So where has Google Wonder Wheel gone?</p>
<p>Well, Google launched <a href="http://www.google.com/instant/">Google Instants</a> the other day, and since then it has disappeared, so it is evident the Wonder Wheel is not linked to the instant results being served by Google.  That is interesting in itself.</p>
<p>However, you can still use wonder wheel, by turning OFF Google instants.</p>
<p>To turn off Google instants, simply do a search and then next to the search button change &#8220;google instants on&#8221; to, yep you guessed it, &#8220;google instants off&#8221;.</p>
<p>Then re-click the search button and you will find Wonder Wheel where it used to be.</p>
<p>There are other potential issues from an SEO point of view, which I will be covering in detail in a post right here once I have done some more testing on a few things.  Just click on the RSS subscribe button to make sure you don&#8217;t miss out on vital info.</p>

<p>There are two types of &#8220;SEO&#8221;. <a href="http://www.searchenginejournal.com/on-page-optimization-a-complete-walkthrough/6746/"> On-page</a> and <a href="http://www.searchenginejournal.com/build-keyword-relevancy-through-off-page-optimization/5445/">off-page</a>.</p>
<p>On-page is all the things you can alter on your site, such as title tags and content.  Actually, those two cover most of what you can affect on-page.</p>
<p>There is another term, off-page optimization.  This is basically linkbuilding and traffic generation.</p>
<p>However, do not fall into the trap of calling it &#8220;optimization&#8221;.</p>
<p>There is no such thing as off-page optimization.</p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>Quite simply, because you cannot optimise what you do not control.  You can build links to try to influence your search engine position, and you can try to generate traffic to your site.  But you cannot control those things or their outcome.</p>
<p>It covers things such as building topical relevancy through anchor text links and it can cover such things as your site becoming seen as a topical authority, a &#8220;hub&#8221; site.  However, it is not optimization, you are not optimizing anything.</p>
<p>So what is it?</p>
<p>It is marketing.  It is trying to weigh the odds in your favour.  It is trying to build strength to your content.</p>
<p>It is not optimization!</p>
