One of the questions I get asked most frequently, and that I see people asking on forums is this….

.

How Can I Create An Effective Link Building Strategy?

The situation that people find themselves in, that leads to them asking this question, is as follows.

They have a website, it’s not ranking the way they hoped. They see other sites doing better, but cannot figure out what they are doing to rank higher. After sifting through everything, they decide that it must be that the sites above them have a better link building strategy, so they ask for one.

The problem is that not only is there no such thing as a “cookie cutter” linkbuilding strategy out there, but also that people generally make a fundamental error when discussing linkbuilding.

They mistake methods for strategy.

To expand on that statement, people describe single methods of linkbuilding as a “strategy”. The problem is it is not a strategy, it is just one method of building links that fits into an overall strategy.

To give you an example of what I mean. People may tell you that using a service such as “The Linkjuicer” is a link building strategy. But it’s not. The linkjuicer service submits your site to social bookmarking sites. So the linkjuicer is one way of getting one sort of links. That is a method of linkbuilding, not a strategy for linkbuilding.

.

The Best Link Building Strategy For Your Website Is…..

……up to you! Any strategy for linkbuilding has to have basic principles, but the actual methods you use are up to you.

Now you may be wondering why I have an image for this post that is clearly from either the Afghan or Iraq conflicts.

The reason is that I want to create an analogy for you. Now it may be a little controversial comparing link building strategy with the strategy employed by coalition forces in two current wars. But stick with me.

In Iraq, the Coalition forces built up overwhelming strength. Most people in starting their linkbuilding do the same. They pick up software such as scrapebox, xrumer, SENuke, or SEO Link Robot. They buy profile link packets, they outsource blog commenting, they use software to hit thousands of directories, software to spin and submit thousands of articles.

In short, they build overwhelming force and then attack with “shock and awe”.

And nothing much happens after an initial victory that lasts just a few weeks.

If anything, the site bounces high then drops like a stone, then either vanishes from the SERPs completely, or bounces around like a rubber ball.

So they hit it again, and again.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, winning the war, the initial battles, the open fighting, was easy. Coalition forces had the training, logistics, technology and power to smash enemy forces in the field. And that’s what the automation allows you to do in linkbuilding.

The problem is that the enemy forces then retreat into the population and conduct a guerrilla war. Finding out where they are, how they operate, what their mindset, ethics and objectives are is tough.

And that’s what happens between the link builder and Google. We attack with shock and awe, then find that after the initial punch, we find it difficult to understand if we are winning, what Google thinks and how it is acting.

More often than not, our massive firepower just makes the war harder to conduct in the long term.

.

Link Building Exit Strategy.

Tough news for you I’m afraid. There is no link building exit strategy.

Going back to our previous analogy, the coalition forces found that opening the fight was easy, then it got tough, then they realised that they needed an exit strategy.

Once you start a war with Google, you have to keep fighting, you cannot stop. If you stop, other sites will take up the war, and yours will slowly (or rapidly) sink without a trace.

NOW is the time, after the initial battles, to employ your big guns. But not to smash Google to pieces, but to build steady links with minimum effort.

So lets round up and put this all together.

.

A Link Building Strategy For Your Website.

Coalition forces employed overwhelming force. They won the conventional war quickly with sheer power. Then they got bogged down as they tried to figure out how to adapt to fighting an enemy who would not come out to fight fair, but who conducted a brutal covert war.

Then they had to decide if they could win, and how they could get out of the war.

With your link building strategy, you need to think about the stages you face.

Initially, with a new site, you need to build trust. So rather than hitting the site with the big guns, build steady, quality links. Don’t employ a single method, don’t do anything too un-natural (like pinging mass lists of profile link URL’s for example) and build up your forces by adding content.

Stage two is to understand your enemy, Google, and to take counter measures. Expect your rankings to bounce all over the place. Be patient. Ramp up your content and link creation. Start to employ your mass link tools bit by bit.

Fight the long war.

Eventually, and it may take 6 months, you will have beaten Google into submission. Google will stabilise your ranking, it will come to the negotiating table and say “this is where we are”.

That is when you can employ the big guns. Once Google wants to negotiate, then you can start ramping things up.

Use the tools to create additional strength for your now established SERP rankings.

Once you have done this, you can slowly wind things down to below the levels you started at. The odd it of good content with linkbait potential, a few well-gained links from various sources, a few generated links each week.

.

Conclusion.

So hopefully you can see how to conduct a war against Google now using an effective linkbuilding strategy. Here are the main points again:

1. Don’t go in hard and fast with massive firepower. Start slow, flush Google out into the open fully.

2. Once Google is fully in the open you can start to engage it, but not too much too soon or it will run for cover.

3. Once Google starts asking for negotiations, hit it with your big guns, end its resistance with a sustained high-level campaign.

4. Maintain a low level police action to keep the peace.

The other take away from this post I want to emphasise is that there is no such thing “cookie cutter” link building strategy. No “one size fits all” plan you can follow like an a-b-c.

Some people pretend that there is a plan, a blueprint, that guarantees success. There is no such thing. Every situation is different.

As the person on the ground, only you can make the decisions, based on the intelligence you gather and the strategy you employ. Your strategy should be a long term one. Mix up all methods of linkbuilding and use them all continually.

Good luck.

Back in October I wrote a post about SEO Link Robot. I was excited about it’s launch. It promised to offer the same sort of functionality as SENuke, but for a reasonable one-off purchase price rather than $127 for SENuke.

Well, I can now report that my excitement was not misplaced.

This follow up is a quick note to anyone wanting to boost their sites rankings fast. SEO link Robot works. I have tried it on several of my sites as the only method of linkbuilding and I have seen a steady increase in traffic and rankings.

Of course you have to be sensible using it, and you have to provide some good content, but with little effort it can really offer you a quick strategy to get some more rankings and traffic.

In the frenzy to build links, most people forget about the goose that can lay golden SEO eggs: Competitor research.

So what is competitor research in SEO and why should it be a vital part of your link building strategy?

Well, no matter how much time you spend building links, you never find all the really juicy ones. An awful lot of people also get lazy and go for massive volumes of low-quality links.

The main point is that you should always be looking at the sites above you in the SERP’s. Once you rule out the sites that have powerful, trusted domains, then the playing field is simplified and leveled. It becomes about links and content.

So what are those sites doing that you are not when it comes to the links they have acquired? The easy answer is of course to look at what they are doing, and then copy it.

.

Competitor Research Is Your SEO “Edge”.

As an example, I was looking at a SERP the other day that I was targeting for a page I had written. I could see a site in third position, which had virtually no content and no authority. So it had to be the links that it had obtained that was propelling the site into that, and several other, competitive searches.

So I fired up a research program (I will not give the name out here, I want you to be “self sufficient” in link building, this means learning to do things manually first, so you understand the mechanics before moving onto using tools).

I sorted the results by PR and found a PR4 URL that had given them an anchor text link and that had only 2 other outbound links on the page. On investigation it turned out to be a blog post that still had open comments.

I submitted a really good quality, relevant comment and waited. 2 days later, my anchor text link was on that page along with only a handful of others. Another, unexpected bonus, was that the blog owner then shut comments!

So I got a link with anchor text on a PR4 page. Yes it was “only” a blog comment, but it was the link that was giving my potential competitor a boost up the rankings.

.

Do Things The Same, Then Do Something Different.

As you can see, it was pretty easy to mimic your competitors success in finding juicy links. Once you have done that, you can then do your own link building . By then doing your own thing, you can outrank your competitors more easily after snatching the links they already have.

So the question I am asking you is, are you doing link building/SEO competitor research for the terms you are trying to rank for? If not, then why not? Is it due to laziness, or a lack of awareness?

If you are researching your competitors SEO and link building, are you doing it enough? Are you doing it every month, and in depth, so you can dig out the golden nuggets that will fuel your site up the SERP’s?

.

So How Do I Complete Competitor Research To improve My SEO and Rankings?

The easiest way, without using paid-for programs, is simply to paste the URL’s that outrank you into Yahoo Site Explorer.

Then click on the “inlinks” button. Then from the dropdown menu select “except from this domain”.

Now you have a list of most of the link external backlinks that point at the URL you are researching.

The next step is to run them through one of the many free online mass-pr-check tools. Simply paste in the URLs you want to check to find their PR. Alternatively, although I have had mixed results with it, you can use the yoast link analysis firefox extension.

Once you have sorted them to find links with PageRank, you can start visiting those URL’s to see if you have a link building opportunity. Of course PR is not everything, and so do not stop there, look down the full list of links and see if you can spot highly-relevant sites that could give your site a boost.

.

Conclusion.

Within your overall SEO strategy, competitor research to aid your own link building is a killer strategy.

This is especially true once you start hitting page two or the bottom of page one of a SERP. Once you get to that level, you can guarantee that the sites above you are taking it as seriously as you are. They have all done the legwork, and are now wringing every last drop out that they can to keep moving up.

You must do the same. Match them, then do something different and better in your own link building to outrank them.

I was up early today, before 5am UK time.

Why?

Because I am excited! Today is the start of something amazing for link building.

One of the best ways you can build strong links to your content is to create “user generated content sites”. You sign-up for a free blog/sitebuilder account on a host such as Squidoo.com, you add keyword rich content and a link to your site and then you build links to that content to give it some real strength.

Up until today the only tool out there that could to that quickly and easily was “SE Nuke”. Powerful, but costing a monthly subscription of $127!

Not something most of us can afford to pay every single month.

But today everything has changed.

There is a tool out there from today that automates:

1. Account creation and email confirmation.
2. Spinning of content.
3. Auto-insertion of links into content.
4. Automatically creates untraceable link wheels by inserting random links to your other generated content at the click of a button.
5. Submits your content with one click.

SOUND GREAT???

What if that software could also submit an RSS feed of all the content you just created to 20 RSS directories, submit your URLs to 20+ bookmarking services AND “Ping” all your URL’s?

What if it could do all that with the same single button click as the one you did to submit your content?

Yes it is that amazing. One click submits the content to your created accounts, then also submits an RSS feed, Pings the URLs created AND submits the URLs to social bookmarking accounts.

It’s most powerful and unique feature is the one click set-up for link wheels (called “mini nets”. It inserts links in a way so that five accounts interlink to give you a more powerful set of links, but without creating a pattern that Google could trace. This is an amazingly powerful one-click option and even SE Nuke does not have such a powerful functionality!

Instant link creation and indexing.

Now I reckon you can see why I am so excited!

What if I also told you it was a one-off purchase, that compared to an SENuke subscription would save you a massive $1327 per year!

That’s right, no huge monthly fees. You buy it, it’s yours to use forever.

SEO Link Robot is written by Steve Hawkins, the same guy who built the profile link building software “SEO Link Dominator”. He is reliable and he updates his software and looks after his clients. I have used this software for a week now as I got an early bird offer, and it works. It works great.

So I am personally recommending it to you as a “game changer” for your link building efforts. This will save you a ton of time and money and it will increase your rankings.

I strongly recommend you check out the information and video’s here:

In Part One of this series of articles I covered WordPress and other blog platforms to aid with finding sites to do comment link posting on. I also shared how you can build a ton of free links from forum software.

In Part Two I covered Content Management Systems such as Drupal and ExpressionEngine as well as social networking platforms such as Elgg.

In Part Three of the guide to finding footprints for link building purposes, I am going to cover some miscellaneous and little known platforms. These are usually less “hit” by link builders due to the fact they are less well known generally.

As with the other parts, this is member content. Membership is great value for money. You get access to the exclusive content, you get free lists of followed blog posts with open comments, you get exclusive prices on my products AND you get access to help from me personally via my members email helpdesk.

NEXT TIME….

Is a biggie. I will be teaching you how to find link locations used by profile link packet providers such as Angela Edwards. That’s right, with a bit of knowledge, you can find all the links provided in ANY link packet for free!

I recently sent an email out to my list asking if they had any questions they would like answered.

A few people sent me questions that basically said “help me get my site ranked better”, “how do I get more traffic” etc. Now these are whole of site strategy questions which cannot be answered via a “cookie cutter” blog post. So I referred those people to try my membership option, which will allow them to develop a strategy with me guiding them through my email ticket help desk.

(I note that none of those people have yet joined as a member though, and at an outlay of just $10 for the help they asked for I guess they did not really want the help that much!)

That left me with a few questions that could be answered in a blog post. The first I am going to answer is this question:

.

“When Page Rank 5 page has 100 outbound links, do they share power of that page so it gets divided between them or each link gets full Page Rank 5 power?”

.

Now this sounds like relatively straightforward question to answer, however as with everything related to Google and SEO, the answer is never a simple “yes” or “no”!

The first point to make is that nobody, other than Google, actually knows exactly how Pagerank works. Some people have made some very educated guesses, and there have even been papers released discussing how it may work. The basis of a lot of how people try to understand PR, is from an original paper written by Google founders Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page.

.

So We Do Know How Google Calculates PageRank Then?

Nope. We know how it was initially theorised. Although it is evident Google uses a variation of the original structure, it is also evident that the structure of the calculations must have evolved as google and the internet have evolved. So nobody really knows exactly.

This obviously presents problems in answering even the most basic questions relating to how PageRank works.

.

Increasing PageRank Is Not Just A Steady Growth Strategy.

Now this is not simple. I struggle with it if I’m honest. My strength is in writing and creativity, not mathematics or logic!

The basic theory is that the more links you get from pages with PR, the higher your own pages PR will eventually be.

However, and this is a vital point, PR growth is not linear, it is logarithmic.

What that means is that it gets progressively harder to reach the next level of PageRank (PR rates from 0-10). So the higher up the PR tree you go, the more fruit you need to gather to go even higher.

No Jason, I’m lost, what are you talking about?!

.

Ok, lets give you an example from anther field to try to explain it.

Climate change. Ok, I know controversial subject. However the central argument from both sides, sceptical and advocate is over how CO2 reacts with heat coming into our atmosphere from the sun.

It is said that when we double pre-industrial Co2 levels, from around 200 to 400 parts per million we will raise the earths temperature by 1 degree celcius.

Now, most people therefore assume that if we double it again, from 400ppm to 800ppm, that we will get a 2 degree rise in global temperatures.

So most people assume that the effects of CO2 are linear.

The problem is that CO2 does not absorb heat in a linear fashion, it absorbs it logarithmically, ie it needs progressively higher volumes to reach the same next level.

So each one degree rise would, the sceptics argue, require doubling of the new CO2 level, so from 400-800ppm would give a 1 degree rise, but it would require us to to from 800-1600ppm to get another 1 degree rise.

And that is how PR works, you need more to get more, not just growing your inbound links in a linear manner. Google has done this to stop anyone from getting high up the PR tree, the fact PR is logarithmic means only a few sites can ever get the linkjuice required to get high PR.

.

So Increasing PageRank Is Not Simple and nothing related to discussing PR is simple!

.

Enough babbling, On With The Show….

So we can see that basically nobody knows exactly how PageRank works and we can see that growing PR, or gaining it from other sites, is not just about linear link growth.

Also we have to now throw into the mix the fact that Google does not see every webpage as equal.

The question stated 100 outbound links. 100 OBL’s on a single page is the maximum recommended by Google, according to Matt Cutts. So obviously pages with more than 100 OBL’s could be considered as poor quality, as could pages with less than 100 OBL’s depending on where those links point.

Remember that as a webmaster you are responsible for who you link to, so linking to poor quality sites could mean your site is seen as low quality, and Google could dampen the PR for that page.

So even that part of the question is unfortunately not clear cut to give an answer to!

.

Page Rank backlinks – Lets Finally Try To Answer The Question.

In case you have forgotten, the question was:

“When Page Rank 5 page has 100 outbound links, do they share power of that page so it gets divided between them or each link gets full Page Rank 5 power?”

In theory, they should get the PageRank of the page divided by the OBL’s on it. So 100 links on a PR5 page would each get a tiny dose of linkjuice.

However, some people have tested and dispute that it is that simple. Some people are suggesting that you can get a lot more than “PR divided by number of links”, if the main domain page PR is high and if the site has good TrustRank.

This is the same argument made by people who say profile links are powerful. Although the page with the link is a PR0, and should therefore pass little or no PR, if the domain is powerful and trusted then it actually passes more PR than you think.

I have seen, for example, a domain that has a main index page PR3, that according to inbound link checking tools only has TWO inbound links pointing at the entire site. One inbound link is from a PR4 page and one from a PR0 page. However the main domain page PR for both those links is PR4.

Now one link on a PR4 page is a powerful link, but should not be enough (with the logarithmic PR effect we have discussed) to make that domain to a PR3 . But it appears it has! This suggests to me that the fact the two linking domains are PR4 and that one is a highly trusted domain is also a factor in the PR passed.

So there is some evidence that the power and trust of the domain overall may influence the PR you will receive from a link on a page. In short, PageRank may not just about PageRank after all.

This is a change in outlook for me. I have always believed that PageRank is about Pages, not sites. But the more evidence I see, the more I think that PageRank is about far more than the page itself!

So The answer is…..yes they will share the PR of that page equally. Or maybe they will not, it depends on how Google views the quality the page and the domain that the link is on.

I recently received an email from a prospective member who asked me a great question, one I am sure a few people visiting the site are wondering.

Basically he/she asked how I was in a position to offer advice when linkbuildersbible.com is only a PR2 on a domain more than a year old.

.

Well, the first thing I will say before tackling that question is to say that my advice is not just for people wanting to build links. I help my members with their questions on the following:

1. Site layout, design and usability (not coding though).

2. SEO and link building.

3. Mentoring on performance, outlook, strategy and goals.

4. Sales and marketing generally and on-site.

5. Keyword research, not doing it for you, but discussing the most realistic to pursue etc.

6. Product and even whole business creation.

7. “Customer impressions” site visits and reviews.

8. Content writing, ie, helping with optimizing the message and the quality.

.

So I’m not just all about link building. If you want to read more about how I am qualified to help, then have a look at the “about” page.

.

Ok, On With The Show…..

First to answer the part of the question about why this site’s PR is “only” 2.

I purchased this domain to set-up a sales page for “The LinkBuilders Bible” when I launched it last year. However as I was getting a lot of sales from email lists, JV’s, affiliates and forum offers, so I never bothered pushing the sales page. Lazy, but my wife was pregnant so I had other things to worry about.

Me and my wife decided that I would be the full-time carer for our child during the day, because my wife earns a large salary as a company director, so it made financial sense for us. It also made sense as I work from home when I want and the majority of my income is passive.

So I undertook a “business rationalisation” project.

I sold, re-directed or simply deleted a lot of my sites. Then I jettisoned a lot of my products.

The plan was to put all my best products into one domain and to focus my efforts into that domain. I also wanted to make the site membership-capable and have the ability to sell other people’s products for them. I also wanted to focus more on helping others, so I needed helpdesk capability within the members area.

With the time I have each day that made sense, rather than trying to run/grow 50+ sites and create products, so that is what I did. The project started in January 2010, and ran until May when my wife gave birth.

So the new LBB site has only actually been in its current incarnation for a short time and was launched fully on 25th August.

My time focus has been, and will be, to provide quality content and advice. That is what the majority of the time has been spent on, rather than linkbuilding. I have commissioned some link generation projects for the site and I will do a bit myself, but primarily I am about quality content, so it’s linkbait and relationship building that is vital to me, not PR and links on this project.

.

So, about that PageRank…..

Personally I wish Google would scrap visible PageRank. A look at a forum like Digital Point will tell you that people get confused about PR and they get obsessed with it.

If you spend even a few minutes looking at the first page results of any Google SERP you will see there is no correlation between PR and ranking. High PR sites do not routinely rank above low or no PR sites. Relevancy in content and links is far more important, especially in the longtail.

Another thing about visible PR is that it is totally out of date. The last publicly visible PR update was in April and the next is rumoured to be in October. So the PR you see in the Google toolbar is already 6 months out of date for all sites, not just this one.

.

PageRank, Sch-mageRank.

I don’t care what the PageRank of this site is. Perhaps that may shock a few people to read that. But I don’t. If this site is a PR2 in ten years time I still don’t care.

What I care about is that is on page one for the terms I am targeting.

What I care about is that the traffic I get converts at a decent ratio.

What I care about is that this site is seen as an authority site in certain circles of people and is trusted as giving the best information and advice possible.

But I really don’t care what PR it is!

.

What I do know is that traffic has increased tenfold in the last three months without much linkbuilding or really trying to drive traffic seems pretty good to me. Yes I have been starting strategies to deliver long-term, solid traffic, but no, I have not tried to build links other than to rank well in a few longtail SERP’s.

Google says “build it and they will come”.

Well, I am putting that ideal to the test on this site!

.
