Small, weak, unable to fight for it’s territory?

It is a familiar tale (or tail…).

The main reason websites are like cute but defenceless kittens is simple.  Their owners do not know how to nurture them and make them grow strong.

The amount of people who spend literally hundreds of hours setting up a website, but who then give up and abandon it within the first 3 months I would estimate is something around 50%.  That is a LOT of people wasting their time, creativity and valuable time on this planet creating something utterly worthless to themselves or anyone else.

So why do people do it in their thousands every single day?

Mostly it is because the decide to strart a site on “X” and they just start building, never looking further ahead than uploading it.  Once they upload it they wait a week and then wonder why they are not getting any traffic (visitors) to the site.

So they go off and search and read forums and they read about “SEO”, “link building” and “internet marketing”.  They realise that setting-up a site if less than half the battle.  Just like a kitten, their site needs nurturing and feeding constantly so it can be strong enough to grab some SERP territory.

By now it should be clear that getting traffic to your site is most of the battle. Apart from writing content and building links to it, you should understand that:

• You need to write relevant content and get people to link to it.
• You need to write great great headlines and submit them to social media sites.
• You need to do press releases.
• You need to contact relevant sites and do co-promotions.
• You need to understand and create “linkbait” all the time.
• You need to be active on relevant forums with a compelling signature link.
• You need to build a mailing list through offering free content for signing-up.
• You need to provide an RSS feed.
• You need to consider your advertising options, both free (exchanges) and paid (for example Google adwords).

And you need to stick at it for a year.  Getting more traffic to a website, strong, constant, loyal traffic , takes TIME and EFFORT.  You need to build relationships with your readers through providing quality content, and ways for them to interact with you and each other (blog comments for example or site forums etc).

So what are they?

Basically, you take the following steps:

1. You find a site that allows you to create a member profile, that also has a decent main domain PageRank value, usually PR3 or better and often PR5 or better to maximise the “link juice” passed to the links you are about to create.

3. You check that the profile is publically viewable (you can view it without being logged into the account).  This means that the google bot will be able to also visit the page and index the links.

3.  You check that the profile area allows you to add links to it, either URL links or full on html or BB code anchor text links.  In for example, a field such as a forum signature field.

4.  You check that the profile page links when added, do not contain the “nofollow” link attribute.

5. If all the above is possible then you can spend some time creating a realistic looking “fake” profile that will not get deleted by a trigger happy site admin.

6.  A week or so later you quietly drop the links onto your profile, and disappear into the night never to visit the account again.

7.  You submit the URL of the page containing your links to social bookmarking and RSS sites to maximise the chances of the links getting indexed.

Phew!  Sounds quite a bit of work for a link doesn’t it?

Well the truth is, yes it is, especially if you do not know how to do it, and you don’t have an automated way, and the time,  to speed the process up.

It does however work, and with software you can easily build 100 links a month in a couple of hours using this method.

So how do I do it?

Well, first of all I don’t recommend you bother with finding your own link locations.  It takes ages!  Find yourself a quality “link packet” provider.

I recommend using 24hourlinks.com as each of their linkpacks are limited to 50 people per pack.   The problem with many other providers is that they do not limit the copies they sell, so you could find yourself trying to create links on a site that 500 other people are also on ding the same thing, which makes the chances of the site owner spotting the activity and deleting the accounts much higher.  So I say go with 24 hour links, as you get 30 link locations for $4.99, which is a steal considering they can only sell 50 copies and they are doing all the legwork for you.

Next you want to grab yourself a copy of a piece of software that will manage the process of adding the links for you, and half the time you spend doing it.

The software is called SEO Link Dominator, and it allows you to load the 24hourlink packs into it, and then it fills all the forms in for you and keeps track of which sites you have visited etc. It also deals with confirmation emails and will sumit your profile link pageURL’s to an RSS fee at the end.

So, to save you the pain of having to read the top five asked questions over and over again, or to stop you asking them yourself, here they are, in no particular order….

1. The links I build to my site are not showing up in (insert name here) backlink tool.

Remember that the search engine can take days, weeks or months to find the page with a link to your site on.  Also, some of these tools simply cannot find all your links.  Yahoo Explorer for example only shows 1000 link locations in its report, as do many backlink checkers.

My advice is to forget about checking that your links are found, its a waste of your time.  Make sure that when you build links that you use the methods outlined in the LinkBuilders Bible to get your links indexed.  Other than that, spend the time building more links rather than worrying about the ones you already have built. The only result you need to monitor is if your link building is raising your site in the SERP’s, so focus on that.

2. Should I only build links to my main index page?

You need your linkbuilding to appear natural.  People linking naturally link to specific content, not to homepages usually. This is called “deep linking”.  So build links to all of your pages.

3. Should I only build relevant links?

The current info, from testing and SEO experts concensus (including Rand Fishkin over at SEOmoz.org)  is that relevancy is not a factor, however trust and authority are. By all means build relevant links, but do not ignore links from non-relevant sites, as they are of equal value.

3.  My site was ranking well but has now dropped down the SERP’s and is moving all over the place.

This is called the “Google dance”.     It effects new sites and sites, and those who suddenly start gathering a larger than normal amount of new inbound links. A new site will usually get an initial “boost” in the SERP’s for a couple of weeks.  This is believed to be Google’s way of helping new sites get an initial boost of interest to help them start attracting those natural links Google always talks about as the ideal.

After the initial boost your site will drop to its true ranking.  That’s when the work begins.  You need to gain trust to start moving up the SERP’s then, which mostly involves getting links to your site.

The Google dance can also effect sites whose Link Velocity suddenly changes, ie the rate at which they normally gain inbound links. So you need to be aware of link velocity and trust,  both of which are covered in the LinkBuilders Bible.

4.  What is a backlink?

Simple I know to many, but it is asked all the time on forums.  A backlink is a link to your site.  It can be a reciprocal (two way) link as well, because it still links back to your site.

The most valuable links you can build are one way backlinks, ie a link to your site that you do not reciprocate.

5. How can I get backlinks?

Again, asked all the time on forums, and always the same anwers come back:

• Directory submissions (only relevant, quality directories)
• Social bookmarking (Digg etc)
• Articles submissions (ezine articles for example)
• Forum signature links
• Blog commenting

All of the above are low-quality links, because anyone can get them and Google does not give much weight to them.
